SHORTWORKS PRODUCTIONS
Shortworks Productions is a Halifax-based organization of indie filmmaker Ann Verrall specializing in community engagement projects that foster cross cultural conversations. Through partnership and collaboration, Shortworks develops thought provoking media arts projects with communities, organizations, schools, Elders, youth and professional artists across the country. Projects include short and long form dramas, documentaries and experimental works.
Ann Verrall, of settler ancestry, lives in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. As a media artist her work has spanned genres of drama, experimental and documentary. A graduate of NSCAD University, Ann’s films have screened at festivals in Canada, USA, England and Australia, broadcast on CBC/GEM, Movieola, MTV Logo, and Super Channel. She has taught at the University of Regina where she was the Filmmaker-in-Residence. Ann’s art practice includes doing community-based video collaborations projects in partnership with cultural organizations, community groups and schools, as well as professional artists from various disciplines – music, dance, theatre, visual arts and media arts. A recipient of a Vision and Accomplishment award from Women in Film & Television Atlantic, Ann’s work explores themes of activism, anti-racism and building bridges between culturally diverse peoples. Her current projects are exploring inter-racial women’s activism in North End Halifax during the early 1960s and Peace and Justice activism.
